I’ve started this farewell four different times already, so I suppose it’s time to just jump into it. Like most things in life, not everything can be planned. Sometimes, we have to take a leap and hope we are prepared. Instead of trying to put together the perfect goodbye to The Current staff and readers, instead I want to try and prepare you (and myself a bit as well) for whatever “leaps” you will someday have to take.
Four years ago I came to Carthage thinking I knew everything about myself but really knowing nothing at all. I had a perfect idea of what I wanted my college career to be, and how I wanted to accomplish it. Well life never seems to want to adhere to those plans does it? One way to be prepared is to not be at all. You can anticipate what may happen but you can never plan for what will come. I began my work with The Current as a second semester sophomore looking for some extra money to supplement my new found online shopping addiction. Never did I think I’d find myself moving my way up, and eventually becoming Editor-in-Chief.
After the hiring process for the editorial staff for the 2011-2012 school year, I found myself with Maeve McFadden, ’12, as my new Managing Editor. I was confident in that decision, but I didn’t know a lot about her. I knew her skills, and believed she could handle the position. But I had yet to discover the simply wonderful person behind her obvious surface accomplishments. When trying to prepare for the next step, don’t ever be afraid to put faith in people. Don’t be afraid to trust them, and see things you may be missing. It sounds sappy, but don’t miss out on someone who could bring out the best in you.
Well my word count is running out so I’ll leave you with one final word of advice. You will know you are prepared when your heart is full and no longer consumed by fear. When I say “your heart is full” what I mean is, the only thing left in there is passion. Passion, I have come to realize, is stronger than you’d think. It will keep you going, and keep you confident.
So, to the staff of 2012-2013, stay passionate. If it’s not The Current, find something else. Let life throw its punches, and keep an open mind. To my fellow graduating seniors, my words of advice are the same, except please stay in touch. The real world scares me, and it’d be nice to hear from you.
